Why growth benchmarking matters
The growth model is the largest contributor to total credits issued over a project’s lifespan. It’s critical that projects use a model that is appropriate for the region and forest type, as an inflated growth estimate could lead to under-delivery or over-crediting risk.
Pachama’s evaluation approach
We evaluate the project-reported growth curves against global and regional studies to verify if maximum stock and annual growth rates are realistic. Additionally, we are developing a method to use our Canopy Height Model (CHM) to estimate growth curves based on observed carbon accumulation.

About our tech

Pachama’s Canopy Height Model (CHM) measures the height of vegetation and how it changes over time, which strongly correlates with the amount of carbon stored in forests. The model uses satellite (optical and radar) and ground truth data, such as airborne lidar. Our industry-leading CHM enables faster and more accurate assessments of projects to determine if the selected area meets registry requirements and has appropriate carbon accounting.
